Whole Wheat Flour Tortilla

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cupsWhole Wheat Flour
  • to tasteSalt
  • 2 spoonsOil
  • 1 cupMilk
  • 1 cup (or as needed)Water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of whole wheat flour with salt to taste. Add 2 spoons of oil to the flour mixture.

  2. 2.Mix and Add Liquids

Mix the dry ingredients well with a spoon to combine the salt and oil evenly. Then, add 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of water to the flour mixture. If needed, add a little more water to achieve the desired dough consistency.

  3. 3.Knead and Rest the Dough

Knead the mixture thoroughly to form a soft and pliable dough. Once kneaded, cover the dough and let it rest for at least one hour at room temperature, or overnight in the refrigerator for best results.

  4. 4.Divide the Dough

Divide the rested dough into 20 equal small portions. Roll each portion into a smooth, round ball.

  5. 5.Roll the Tortillas

Take one dough ball and flatten it slightly. Using a rolling pin, roll it out into a thin, circular tortilla.

  6. 6.Cook on a Pan (Medium Flame)

Heat a non-stick pan (tava) over medium flame. Place a rolled tortilla on the hot pan. Cook until you see small bubbles forming on the surface, then flip it to the other side. Continue cooking on medium flame until both sides are lightly cooked and have some brown spots, but do not expect it to puff up completely at this stage.

  7. 7.Puff on High Flame

Transfer the partially cooked tortilla directly onto a high flame (or a wire rack over a gas burner). Cook for a few seconds on each side, flipping as needed, until the tortilla puffs up completely and develops more brown spots.

  8. 8.Cool and Store

Once cooked, remove the tortilla from the flame and place it on a cooling rack. Allow the tortillas to cool completely for at least 2 hours before storing them in an airtight container. This prevents them from becoming soggy.
