Lachha Paratha – Layered Indian Flatbread

  • 1/2 tbspSalt
  • 2 tbspOil/ghee/butter

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare the Dough

    Add 2 cups of wheat flour to a large mixing bowl.

  2. 2.Add Seasoning

    Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt to the flour.

  3. 3.Add Fat

    Add 2 tablespoons of oil, ghee, or butter to the flour mixture.

  4. 4.Mix Ingredients

    Mix the ingredients well with your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  5. 5.Knead the Dough

    Gradually add water and knead the mixture to form a soft, pliable dough. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  6. 6.Rest the Dough

    Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes.

  7. 7.Re-knead Dough

    After 10 minutes, briefly knead the dough again to make it smoother.

  8. 8.Divide Dough

    Divide the dough into equal portions.

  9. 9.Flatten Dough Portion

    Take one portion of the dough, flatten it slightly, and dust it with a little dry flour.

  10. 10.Roll into Circle

    Roll out the dough using a rolling pin into a large, thin circle.

  11. 11.Cut Strips

    Using a knife or pizza cutter, make parallel cuts across the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border at the top and bottom intact.

  12. 12.Grease Dough

    Brush the entire surface of the cut dough generously with oil, ghee, or butter.

  13. 13.Form Log

    Carefully roll the dough from one end to the other, gathering all the strips into a long log.

    Brush the log with a little more oil, ghee, or butter.

  15. 15.Coil into Spiral

    Coil the log into a tight spiral shape, tucking the end underneath.

  16. 16.Flatten Spiral

    Gently flatten the coiled dough with your palm.

    Dust the flattened spiral with a little dry flour.

    Roll out the spiral into a paratha of desired thickness, maintaining the round shape.
