  • 1 cup (190g)Dried lentils
  • 2 tablespoonsOil
  • 1, choppedOnion
  • 4-5 cloves, crushedGarlic
  • 2 tablespoonsGrater ginger
  • 2 teaspoonsCurry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoonTurmeric
  • 1 teaspoonCumin
  • 1 can (14oz/400g)Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14oz/400g)Coconut milk
  • 3 cups (720ml)Water
  • to tasteSalt
  • to tasteBlack pepper
  • 1 teaspoon (optional)Garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons, choppedCoriander

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare Lentils

    Rinse 1 cup (190g) of dried lentils under cold water using a sieve.

  2. 2.Sauté Onion

    Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large pot or pan over medium heat. Add 1 chopped onion and sauté for 5-6 minutes until it becomes lightly golden.

  3. 3.Add Aromatics and Spices

    Add 4-5 crushed garlic cloves and 2 tablespoons of grated ginger to the pan. Stir well. Then, add 2 teaspoons of curry powder, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, and 1 teaspoon of cumin. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant.

  4. 4.Combine Wet Ingredients

    Pour in 1 can (14oz/400g) of crushed tomatoes, followed by 1 can (14oz/400g) of coconut milk, and 3 cups (720ml) of water. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

  5. 5.Add Lentils and Simmer

    Add the rinsed lentils to the mixture and stir everything together. Bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, add 1 teaspoon of garam masala (optional) and stir. Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.

  6. 6.Finish and Serve

    After simmering, check the seasoning and add more salt or pepper if needed. Turn off the heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander. Serve the Dhal hot with white rice.
