  • 1/4 teaspoonGround Cloves
  • 1 teaspoonPure Vanilla Extract

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare the Yams

    Wash and peel the medium-sized red garnet yams. Once peeled, rinse them again.

  2. 2.Chop the Yams

    Chop the peeled yams into approximately half-inch thick circles. Place the chopped yams into a 9x13 inch baking dish, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

  3. 3.Prepare the Candied Mixture

    In a pan over medium heat, melt 8 tablespoons of butter. Add 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger (optional), and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves. Mix all ingredients until well combined and the mixture is bubbling.

  4. 4.Add Vanilla and Combine

    Turn off the heat and pour 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract into the candied mixture. Stir to combine. Pour the entire candied mixture evenly over the chopped yams in the baking dish.

  5. 5.First Bake

    Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.

  6. 6.Baste and Final Bake

    After 30 minutes, remove the foil and baste the yams by pouring the accumulated juices from the bottom of the dish over them. Re-cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the yams are tender.

    Once tender, remove the candied yams from the oven and serve warm. Enjoy your sweet, tender, and buttery candied yams!
