Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

Into a jug, add 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 2 minced cloves of garlic, 1/2 cup of soy sauce, 1/4 cup of oyster sauce, 1.5 tablespoons of sesame oil, and 1 cup of beef stock. Give it a good stir together, then set aside.

Step 2: Combine Beef and Sauce

Add 700g (1.5 lbs) of beef cut into thin strips and 1 small diced brown onion into the pot of the slow cooker. Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the beef and onion. Give everything a quick stir together to ensure everything is nicely coated.

Step 3: Initial Cooking

Pop the lid on the slow cooker and set it on low for 4 to 5 hours, or on high for about 2.5 hours.

Step 4: Thicken Sauce and Add Broccoli

After the initial cooking time, remove the lid. In a separate cup, mix 3 tablespoons of cornflour (cornstarch) with 3 tablespoons of water to create a slurry, then pour it into the slow cooker. Add 1 head of broccoli, broken up into florets, to the pot. Give that another stir to make sure the broccoli is submerged in the sauce.

Step 5: Final Cooking

Put the lid back on and allow this to cook for another 30 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the succulent slow-cooked beef and broccoli with rice, noodles, or by itself.

Pro Tips

Serve with rice, noodles, or even just by itself.

The beef will be wonderfully tender and melt in your mouth.

The sauce is salty, sweet, and has a wonderful savory flavor with a distinct sesame taste.

Recipe Variations

Replace broccoli with your favorite stir-fry vegetables like snow peas, thinly sliced carrots, or capsicum (bell pepper).
