All Ingredients - Main Ingredients

  1. Moong Dal & Rice approx. 1 cup each
  2. Water (for soaking) enough to cover
  3. Water (for cooking) 4-5 cups
  4. Oil 2-3 tbsp
  5. Salt 1 tsp
  6. Turmeric 1/2 tsp
  7. Cloves 5-6 pieces
  8. Black Pepper 5-6 pieces
  9. Bay Leaves 2-3 leaves
  10. Ghee 1 tbsp

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Moong Dal & Rice

Pour approximately 1 cup each of Moong Dal and Rice into a bowl. Add enough water to cover them completely and let them soak for about .

Step 2: Prepare Cooking Base

Place a clay pot on the stove over a fire. Add about 4-5 cups of water to the pot, followed by 2-3 tablespoons of oil. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, 5-6 pieces of cloves, 5-6 pieces of black pepper, and 2-3 bay leaves to the water. Bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 3: Cook Khichdi

Add the soaked Moong Dal and Rice to the boiling water in the pot. Let the khichdi boil and simmer until it thickens and the dal and rice are soft. Stir the khichdi with a wooden spoon occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. Continue stirring until it reaches the desired consistency. Add 1 tablespoon of ghee to the cooked khichdi and stir until well combined.

Step 4: Serve Khichdi

Carefully remove the pot of khichdi from the stove. Serve the Gujarati Moong Dal Khichdi hot in a serving dish.
