  • 1 cupToor Dal (Yellow Split Peas)
  • 1 bunch (approx. 1 cup chopped)Dill Leaves (Sabsige Soppu)
  • 2 medium, choppedTomatoes
  • 1 small, choppedOnion
  • 4-5, peeledGarlic Cloves
  • 2 cupsWater
  • 1/2 teaspoonTurmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste)Salt
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste)Chili Powder
  • 1 tablespoonSambar Powder

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare Vegetables

    Chop the onion, tomatoes, and dill leaves. Peel the garlic cloves.

  2. 2.Combine Ingredients in Pressure Cooker

    Add the washed Toor Dal, chopped dill leaves, chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, and peeled garlic cloves to a pressure cooker.

  3. 3.Add Water and Initial Seasonings

    Pour in 2 cups of water, add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt to the pressure cooker.

  4. 4.Pressure Cook the Dal

    Close the pressure cooker with its lid and place it on the stove. Cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles or for about 10-12 minutes until the dal and vegetables are tender.

  5. 5.Mash and Add More Spices

    Once the pressure naturally releases, open the cooker. Lightly mash the cooked dal and vegetables. Add 1 teaspoon of chili powder and 1 tablespoon of sambar powder. Mix everything well.

  6. 6.Simmer the Dal

    Transfer the seasoned dal mixture to another pot on the stove. Add a little water to rinse out the pressure cooker and pour it into the pot to adjust consistency. Stir well and bring the dal to a gentle simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  7. 7.Serve

    Serve the hot Dill Leaves Dal with steamed rice.
