Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Prepare Masala Paste Ingredients

Gather all the ingredients for the masala paste: 7-8 Byadagi chilies, 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds, 1/2 tablespoon of cumin seeds, 12 black peppercorns, 1 tablespoon of mixed fenugreek, mustard, and ajwain, 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 5 garlic cloves, a small lemon-sized ball of tamarind, a 1/2 inch piece of ginger, and 1/4 of a medium onion, roughly chopped.

  2. 2.Grind the Masala Paste

Transfer all the gathered masala ingredients into a mixer grinder. Add water as needed to help with grinding. Grind the ingredients into a smooth, thick paste. Ensure there are no large chunks remaining.

  3. 3.Prepare the Fish

Clean 250-300 grams of Kaane fish (Ladyfish). Remove the heads and thoroughly clean the fish. Since the fish are small, keep them whole rather than cutting them into pieces.

  4. 4.Assemble the Curry Base

Pour the freshly ground masala paste into a clay pot. Add additional water to achieve your desired curry consistency. Then, add 1/4 of a finely chopped medium onion, a 1/2 inch piece of finely crushed ginger, and 1 sliced green chili to the pot.

  5. 5.Mix and Boil the Curry

Mix all the ingredients in the pot thoroughly with your hands to ensure everything is well combined. Place the clay pot on the stove over medium heat. Add salt to taste and mix well again. Cover the pot with a lid and bring the curry to a vigorous boil.

  6. 6.Add Fish and Cook

Once the curry is boiling vigorously, carefully add the cleaned Kaane fish into the pot. Gently swirl the pot to mix the fish with the curry. Avoid using a spoon to prevent the delicate fish from breaking. Cover the pot again and cook for only 1-2 minutes until the fish is cooked through.

  7. 7.Prepare and Add Tempering

In a separate small pan, heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil. Add 2-3 crushed garlic cloves and temper until fragrant and lightly golden. Pour this hot tempering directly over the cooked fish curry in the clay pot. Immediately cover the pot with the lid to trap the aromatic flavors.

  8. 8.Serve the Curry

The Kaane Meenina Puli Munchi is now ready to be served. Enjoy it hot with steamed rice.
