Follow each step to make the recipe successfully.
Take 1/2 cup of nylon sago (javvarisi) in a mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of hot water to the sago and let it soak for . The sago will swell and become soft.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the soaked sago and mix well. In a separate bowl, add 1 cup of rice flour. Pour the soaked sago mixture (including any remaining water) into the rice flour.
Mix the sago and rice flour thoroughly by hand. Add a small amount of additional water if needed to achieve a crumbly, puttu-like consistency. The mixture should resemble coarse breadcrumbs.
Transfer the prepared puttu mixture onto a clean cloth placed on an idli plate. Place the idli plate with the puttu mixture into a steamer with hot water. Cover and for until cooked through. The puttu should not stick to your fingers when tested.
Carefully remove the puttu from the steamer and transfer it to a serving bowl. Add 1 cup of grated coconut and approximately 1/2 cup of sugar (or to taste) to the puttu. Mix all ingredients well until combined. Serve hot.
