  3. Red Chillies (Bedgi, broken) 2
  4. Curry Leaves some
  5. Hing (Asafoetida) 1 tsp

    • 1 bay leaf + a pinch of lemon zest — Aroma only — flavor is unique.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Boil the Dal

Take 1.5 cups of toor dal. Add 7-8 green chillies (or to taste), a pinch of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of oil, and sufficient water. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles until the dal is well-cooked and easily mashable. Mash the dal thoroughly.

Step 2: Adjust Consistency and Season

Transfer the mashed dal to a pot. Add water to achieve your desired consistency (thick or thin). Add salt to taste and mix well. Bring the dal to a nice boil for .

Step 3: Prepare the Tempering

In a separate small pan, heat 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil. Once hot, add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add 2 broken red chillies and some curry leaves. Finally, add 1 teaspoon of hing (asafoetida).

Step 4: Combine and Serve

Pour the prepared tempering over the boiling dal. Mix gently. Your Mangalorean-style Dal (Daali Toy) is now ready to be served hot with rice, chapati, or phulka.
