Take 1.5 cups of toor dal. Add 7-8 green chillies (or to taste), a pinch of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of oil, and sufficient water. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles until the dal is well-cooked and easily mashable. Mash the dal thoroughly.

In a separate small pan, heat 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil. Once hot, add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add 2 broken red chillies and some curry leaves. Finally, add 1 teaspoon of hing (asafoetida).
Pour the prepared over the boiling dal. Mix gently. Your Mangalorean-style Dal (Daali Toy) is now ready to be served hot with rice, chapati, or phulka.
