Chana Dal Chutney - South Indian Style

Ingredients

For Chutney Paste

  • 1 tbspOil
  • 1/4 cupChana Dal
  • 2-3Dried Red Chilli
  • a fewCurry Leaves
  • 1/2 cupGrated Coconut
  • 2Green Chillies
  • small pieceTamarind
  • as per tasteSalt
  • 1/2 cupWater

For Tempering

  • 1 tbspOil
  • 1/2 tspMustard Seeds
  • a fewCurry Leaves
  • 1 tspUrad Dal
  • 2Dried Red Chilli

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Roast Chana Dal

    Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add 1/4 cup of chana dal and roast, stirring continuously, until it starts to change color.

  2. 2.Add Chillies and Curry Leaves

    Once the chana dal starts to change color, add 2-3 dried red chillies and a few fresh curry leaves to the pan. Continue to roast until the dal is golden brown and aromatic.

  3. 3.Cool the Mixture

    Turn off the flame and let the roasted chana dal mixture cool down completely.

  4. 4.Combine Ingredients for Chutney

    Transfer the cooled roasted chana dal, dried red chillies, and curry leaves to a mixer grinder jar.

  5. 5.Add Remaining Chutney Ingredients

    To the mixer jar, add 1/2 cup of grated coconut, 2 green chillies, a small piece of tamarind, salt as per taste, and 1/2 cup of water.

  6. 6.Grind to a Fine Paste

    Blend all the ingredients in the mixer grinder until a smooth, fine paste is formed. Add a little more water if needed to achieve the desired consistency.

  7. 7.Transfer Chutney

    Pour the prepared chana dal chutney into a serving bowl.

  8. 8.Prepare Tempering

    In a small tempering pan (karahi), heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds and let them splutter.

  9. 9.Add Remaining Tempering Ingredients

    Add a few curry leaves, 1 teaspoon of urad dal, and 2 dried red chillies to the hot oil. Sauté until the urad dal turns golden brown and the chillies are crisp.

  10. 10.Pour Tempering over Chutney

    Carefully pour the hot tempering mixture over the prepared chana dal chutney in the serving bowl.

  11. 11.Serve

    Mix the tempering gently into the chutney. Serve the delicious Chana Dal Chutney immediately with hot idlis, dosas, or vadas.
