Indian Style Lentils Stew

Lentils is one of the most common food dishes made in Indian households. In this recipe video, you’ll learn how to make Brown Lentils (Whole Masar) in slow cooker and season it with flavorful Tadka. This Indian Lentils Stew is really healthy, easy to prepare and so hearty and comforting. These Lentils can be enjoyed over rice, with roti, paratha, naan or other kinds of breads.

 

Servings: 3 Preparation time:
Ingredients:
  • Masoor Dal, Dhal, Red, Brown Lentils 2 cups Brown Lentils
  • Water Boiled Plain Raw Mineral, Hot, Warm Cold, Mix, sparkling, Carbonated 8 cups water
  • Salt, Common Salt, Rock Salt, Table Salt 2 tsp Salt
  • Turmeric, Ground,powder, Haldi, Nitu Didi turmeric powder 2 tsp Turmeric (Haldi)
  • Red Chili Powder, Paprika, Deggi Mirch, Red Chilli Powder, Red Chilly, Red Ch 2 tsp Red chilli powder (or for milder taste Paprika)
  • Garam Masala Powder, NITU DIDIs garam masala powder 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • Tomatoes, Red, Ripe, Raw, Red Tomato 3 Tomatoes
  • Onions, Raw, Onion 1 (large) onion
  • Cumin Seed, Shahi Jeera, Nitu Didi cumin seed 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • Ginger Garlic Paste, 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • Green Chillies, Chilies, Hot Chili, Green, Raw, Chilli, Chilly 1 Green chilli
  • Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Cooking 2 tbsp oil
  • Optional:
  • Butter, (Dallops of )butter
  • Ghee, Ghee
  • Coriander Leaf Corriander, Cilantro Leaves, Green, Leaves, Parsley Leaves, Coriander Cilantro leaves
  • Ginger Root, Raw, Fresh Ginger ( Julienne) Ginger

Instructions (Preparation Steps):

  • 1. Add lentils in slow cooker along with water.
  • 2. Add salt, turmeric, Red chilli pwd
  • 3. Cook for 2 hours.
  • 4. Prepare Tadka (Tempering/ Seasoning) by heating 2 tbsp oil in a wok.
  • 5. Add cumin seeds. Fry for 30 secs. Add onions, green chilli and ginger-garlic paste
  • 6. Cook for 3-4 mins. Add tomatoes and let them turn mushy. Add in garam masala and mix well.
  • 7. Add tadka in the lentils and let cook further for 30 mins. Cooking further is optional.
  • These lentils will be thick. More water can be added during cooking process for soupy consistency.

Cook's Tip:
1 cup heavy cream can be replaced by 1 cup evaporated milk OR ¾ cup milk with 1/3 cup of butter.

Always warm dry spices like cumin seeds, cardamom, cloves, etc. on a griddle before powdering. They will grind faster and the powder will be finer.

If you cook Indian food, you are bound to get turmeric stains on your clothes at one time or another. The good news is they're really easy to take out. Wash the stained clothes/kitchen linen immedeately in cool water and soap. Dry in the sun and the stain will fade to a very pale pink. Wash the article again and the stain will be gone!
