Learn how to make Indian style spicy chickpeas, popularly known as Chana masala. Easy to make, this recipe will wow all chickpea lovers!


Servings: 4 Preparation time:
  • Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Cooking 4 tbsp oil
  • Chickpeas, Garbanzo Beans, Bengalgram, Mature Seeds, Raw, Channa, Kabuli Chana Dal, Chana Dal, Gram Dhal 1 cup chickpeas (boil them, they will double in volume)
  • Onions, Raw, Onion 2 onions
  • Tomatoes, Red, Ripe, Raw, Red Tomato 3 (small) tomatoes
  • Ginger Root, Raw, Fresh Ginger 1 tbsp ginger
  • Garlic, Raw, Garlic flakes, Lahsun, grated garlic, Garlic pods 1 tbsp garlic
  • Green Chillies, Chilies, Hot Chili, Green, Raw, Chilli, Chilly 1 tbsp green chilies
  • Amchur Powder, Mango Pd, Mango Powder, Amchoor Powder,dry Mango Powder, Man 1 tsp mango powder (amchur)
  • Yogurt, Plain, Low Fat, Curd, yoghurt 2 tbsp yogurt
  • Water Boiled Plain Raw Mineral, Hot, Warm Cold, Mix, sparkling, Carbonated ½ cup water
  • Coriander Leaf Corriander, Cilantro Leaves, Green, Leaves, Parsley Leaves, Coriander Coriander for garnish
  • Spices:
  • Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Cooking 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Cumin Seed, Shahi Jeera, Nitu Didi cumin seed 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt, Common Salt, Rock Salt, Table Salt 3 tsp salt
  • Coriander Seeds, Hara Dhaniya 1 tsp crushed coriander seeds
  • Turmeric, Ground,powder, Haldi, Nitu Didi turmeric powder 1 tsp turmeric
  • Red Chili Powder, Paprika, Deggi Mirch, Red Chilli Powder, Red Chilly, Red Ch 1 tsp red chili powder
  • Garam Masala Powder, NITU DIDIs garam masala powder ½ tsp garam masala

Instructions (Preparation Steps):

  • Instructions:
  • Hot oil on pan
  • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds
  • When start clattering, add onions (chopped) and fry for 2 minutes
  • Add green chili, ginger, garlic cloves and fry them until onions are turned golden brown
  • Put chopped tomatoes, mango powder, crushed coriander seeds, turmeric powder, and red chili powder and mix all well
  • Maintain the heat
  • Tomatoes get tender
  • Add 2 tbsp of yogurt and mix well
  • Add boiled chickpeas with ½ cup of water
  • Do not add any extra water
  • Put salt
  • Stir all well
  • Add coriander leafs
  • Let it cook for 15 minutes
  • Add pinch of garam masala and cilantro
  • Serve with naan, bread, luchi etc

Cook's Tip:
Add fresh fruit to yogurt or oatmeal for a pleasant texture and added vitamin boost.
Always warm dry spices like cumin seeds, cardamom, cloves, etc. on a griddle before powdering. They will grind faster and the powder will be finer.
If you cook Indian food, you are bound to get turmeric stains on your clothes at one time or another. The good news is they're really easy to take out. Wash the stained clothes/kitchen linen immediately in cool water and soap. Dry in the sun and the stain will fade to a very pale pink. Wash the article again and the stain will be gone!

    Favorite dish since leaving India several months ago, in fact I don't remember any served to me being as good even though mine lacked the mango powder and chilies that I didn't have. Doubled the other spices for extra ka-pow.
